#1 Investigative Questions

After looking at examples of Visual Culture in art, commentary on Social Culture, and Poster Art, reflect on the following questions.  Use your sketchbook to record your thoughts.

  • Describe examples of of Visual Culture that you interact with on a daily/weekly basis that you may or may not have been aware of before.  How do your interactions with Visual Culture affect your everyday life? How does Visual Culture affect society?

  • Poster Art can communicate information and powerful ideas to the viewer.  Make a list of concerns you have that deal with elements of both Visual and Social Culture.  Write down images that could represent your concerns. How can you visually put some of these ideas together? Think about what was presented in Task #2: Juxtaposition, Remix, and Culture Jamming.

  • Previously in Task #3, you looked at several different examples of, and ideas for Poster Art.  What do you think are the most important elements needed to create a successful poster design?

#3 Reflecting

Ask yourself: "Have I developed a solid concept for my poster?  What is my idea?  Is there anything that I am struggling with?   What would I like feedback on?"

Record your answers in your sketchbook.

Write down any other questions or thoughts you might have concerning the project. We will discuss  these later in small groups, along with feedback from peers for your sketches.

#2 Creating

Let's get started with ideas for your poster! Using your thoughts from above, you will start formulating a concept and sketch out ideas for the imagery and design of your poster. Let's first look at the main objectives of the Illustration project:

  • Artistic concept for the Poster Art involves a commentary on social culture and issues, and/or communication of Visual Culture

  • Illustration should be original in design, and includes effective use of visuals-in both imagery and lettering

In your sketchbook, begin drawing out ideas for your poster.  Do several sketches!! Do not just stop at one or two ideas. It is important to have many options to choose from in order to create a very successful artwork. Consider this: take sketches you like and construct variations of each.

Remember to include text, but it should be concise and clear, a companion to your imagery, not its master.  Use the internet and other resources as reference for your imagery.
